Luckily, Trotsky is a great polemicist and there was an evident necessity for some polemic in this book. The content and tone of the whole thing, though, is inevitably and necessarily dictated by the needs of the moment and the mortal pressure of the Stalinist counterrevolution, and so all these exclusions and changes are quite understandable.
